Hydrant Mapping in Maple Avenue's District

  Sunday, February 8th 2009

I spent the majority of this weekend with a GPS unit and a laptop recording the latitude and longitude of the various hydrants in the Maple Avenue fire district.

All in all I recorded 79 hydrants, and the results are very good - you can see all the hydrants on a google maps I put together here:

http://www.greenfieldfd.org/map/hydrants.html

This is just a proof of concept, as I have many plans for this project:
  1. Add hydrant data from the other portions of the fire district onto this page (currently in the works)
  2. Add the ability to calculate a distance from a house to a given hydrant - this is important for insurance deductions. For example, most insurance companies will provide a discount if you live within a given distance from a hydrant - the fire district has received numerous calls regarding this over the years - so this application will allow us to answer these questions easily, and also allow for our residents to take the initiative themselves!
  3. Include this information in the next newsletter
  4. Integrate this data into FireTracker, so that it will be displayed on the GIS unit - so that firefighters can graphically see the call location, and the nearest hydrant to that given emergency.

We have a prototype GIS mapping unit being delivered this month, and the data is already ready for integration - more on this initiative once we begin the integration process...
Any questions, just let me know!
